Google Penguin

After the panda now there is a new animal in Google’s zoo. As per title you may understand who is that? (that’s penguin). Latest algorithm update from Google to beat spam. Google is trying to make web clean of spam. As per my thinking Google’s current aim is to fight all blackhat seo tactics and reward white hat seo. Google’s webspam team head Matt Cutts said in a blog post at official webmaster central blog that we (Google webspam team) are monitoring every type of webspam everyday from keyword stuffing to link spamming which moves sites to the top in serp (Search engine result page).

What is Google Penguin?

Recently (on April 24th) Google webspam team released a new algorithm to fight web spam. On April 24th it was named webspam algorithm update and later on 27th April its name was changed to Google penguin update. This algorithm is sister algorithm of Google panda (as I think).

What about panda?

This is a different search engine algorithm which will works along with panda.
Google Panda’s aim is to fight sites with low quality, duplicate, no original contents, contents farms, low speed, high bounce rate and etc.
While Google Penguin’s aim to fight webspam like link spamming, negative seo (over-optimization seo), keyword stuffing as well as spun articles.

How much queries were affected?

Google panda affected about 12% of queries, while this (penguin update) affects about 3.1% search queries (in English).

Matt Cutts also give the example of sites that were affected by this algorithm update.

Example of keyword stuffing (by Matt Cutts):

Example of spun article and linking to non-niche (by Matt Cutts):

How to recover from Google Penguin effect?

Matt Cutts further said that use only white hat search engine optimization, don’t use any other tactics that violates Google webmaster guideline i.e. blackhat tactics.

Stop keyword stuffing:

Keyword stuffing means to repeat same keyword again and again or using irrelevant keywords different from your niche.

Keyword density:

If survive penguin you have keep your keyword density under 2%, If your keyword density is over 5% then that's over-optimization and you can be infected by penguin update.

Avoid building unusual backlinks and linking to unusual sites:

Many people create backlinks using blackhat tactics or linking to non-niche sites often people sell links or many sites allow guest post which helps people to get backlinks (whitehat), many guest authors link to a related topic (niche) but some of them link to non-related topic or there are many template for sites which contains spam links; Google strictly forbidding linking to non-niche sites. These links can reduce your ranking.

Avoid automation:

People use various softwares and plugins (based on blackhat) to generate automatic contents and also spin other’s article, as well as tagging incoming search terms on autopilot, this can increase keyword density. avoid these types of softs.

Wrongly hitted by this algorithm

Sometimes algorithm also hit good sites, if your site is wrongly hitted by this update, then you can sent feedback about this update through below form:
Google Penguin feedback form.
